Many women who have undergone mastectomy or lumpectomy face the stigma that is associated with having removed their socially perceived and accepted “womanliness”. For these women, it is not the end of the road. Breast reconstruction surgery is an option that is available to them—it is just that they do not know of it yet. Just look at Angelina Jolie who underwent a double mastectomy and then had breast reconstruction surgery is done.
At Aster CMI, we would like to put an end to the lack of knowledge of breast plastic surgery that is rampant in India. We have designed our Breast Reconstruction Awareness Campaign to fill the void and promote awareness, and educate women about the options available to those who are considering post-mastectomy reconstruction breast reconstruction.
There have been worldwide research studies being done on breast reconstruction. An article published in the American Society of Plastic Surgery forum mentions that less than a quarter of women know the wide range of breast reshaping surgery options available to them. Most are not even familiar with the quality of outcomes that can be expected with breast reconstruction. They don’t know yet as no one told them.
